Be A Cyber Saathi – Lokpriya Cyber Saathi Initiative for Digital Safety & Awareness Program for Public

Increasing cyber safety awareness and digital literacy across India is the primary vision of Cyber Saathi™. In pursuance of the same, Cyber Saathi conducts awareness programs for all through cyber awareness boot camps. This program specifically targets the issues faced by the common man and provides information and solutions in a concise and easily understandable manner. This program is intended to create digital literacy and awareness amongst one and all and the program targets through online and offline awareness programs, interior areas of India.

Mobile and smart phones; digital wallets and online banking services have permeated far corners of India. Cybercrimes such as phishing, farming and job scams are equally on the rise more so in rural areas, where the financially weaker sections not only fall prey to false advertisements and seemingly lucrative opportunities but are mostly left adrift without effective enforcement mechanisms and more importantly without possibility of recovering their losses due to such scams.

Lokpriya Cyber Saathi™ simplifies existing and evolving trends in cybercrimes for public and in particular those in rural areas on safe digital and online practices and their remedies under law through interaction in local languages, exchange of thoughts, encouraging attendees in sharing their information and handling awareness in a simple and relatable fashion.

Further, Lokpriya Cyber Saathi™ creates gender-based sensitisation on cybercrimes such as revenge porn, violation of privacy, morphing, defamation and cyberbullying. The consequences and remedies of illegal / non-consensual online activity is clearly explained and effort is taken to create a more understanding and sharing atmosphere for victims of cybercrimes and to deter persons from indulging in such crimes.

Lokpriya Cyber Saathi ensures that participants will be made aware that culprits can be tracked to even remote areas. That victims are not to be blamed for falling prey to scamsters and Criminals and that they ought to seek their remedies and not allow Criminal elements to further hold them to ransom through misuse of digital mediums. In particular Lokpriya Cyber Saathi intends to ensure that young adults are made aware of the consequences of Criminal activities and punishments in law to deter them from committing crimes through ignorance or assumptions of anonymity. The entire thrust of the program will be towards prevention and protection and assurance to victims that they are not alone and to embolden victims through knowledge of remedies in law and to encourage them to seek legal remedies.

Lokpriya Cyber Saathi™ also addresses the communication gap between the rural youth and their parents by educating parents on the need for healthy supervision and privacy-related boundaries that are to be respected online. This creates a chain of accountability and thereby deters cybercrimes.

The endeavour of this program is to destigmatise conversations regarding cybercrime and to educate and ensure digital literacy and thereby empower rural India to step into this digital age with confidence and as Cyber Saathis to each other through peer mentoring, support systems and guides for immediate assistance and to seek further legal remedies through appropriate means.

Cyber Saathi™ along with Banasthali Vidhyapith University and Red Dot Foundation held its first Lokpriya Cyber Saathi™ program with the able support from Banasthali Vidyapith University, its student volunteers and teachers, for residents of a village in Tonk, Rajasthan, India.

Cyber Saathi will be undertaking programs under this initiative through its internal resources and also with collaborations and partnerships with other Civil Society Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations; Governmental organizations / Initiatives, individuals / corporates / educational entities / law enforcement agencies / Police Academies / Judicial Academies.
